The Voice Of Malaysia

 

“The Voice of Malaysia” is co-hosted by Tai Hsiao Hua, the well-known Chinese author in Malaysia, and Owen Yap, the famous TV anchor. The series was filmed in 5 featured cities across Malaysia, namely Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Klang, and Kajang, while the literary works of 16 Malaysian authors, including SN Datuk Seri A. Samad Said, Datuk Dr. Siti Zainon Ismail, Tai Hsiao Hua, Looi Yook Tho, Teoh Chee Keong, Jomy Yaw, Hu Qing Chao, Zeng Zhen, and others were selected.

Episode 6

【The Voice of Malaysia】Food and Nostalgia

If we were to introduce Malaysia to our friends overseas, it would be about the food! There are so many foods that we should introduce and be proud of.
 
Whenever people feel homesick, they find comfort in enjoying the food. The home-made dishes in our mothers’ kitchens have a flavour that comes from our ancestral homes.
 
It has been passed down from generation to generation and settle down in a foreign land. They have gradually changed into a different and unique culture in the land like the local food “Min Hun Kueh”.
 
The food is a reflection of the way people choose to live. We have different backgrounds and languages. When these different cultures meet the sweet, sour and spicy “Rojak”, they collide and mix to create a taste that only we can understand.
 
The food is also a reflection of the cultural meaning behind it. “Nyonya Kuih” is a work of art that preserves the flavour of the thing itself. It uses only coconut and the most common local materials to create a colourful and flavourful little pastry.
 
We find comfort in making the food in order to remember the past and to look forward to the future.

【The Voice of Malaysia】History Lies Between Us – Kajang

Kajang is not an ancient city or a famous capital and does not attract as much attention as other big cities.
 
However, this city has a great amount of history. These historical stories may not be recorded in our history books, but that does not mean they are not important. The locals in Kajang collect and research precious unofficial historical material with their own knowledge. They record and pass it on in time, not waiting to miss it too late.
 
The locals have chosen to protect the city by restoring its historical sites and promoting community creation.
 
“We will become history after 100 years.” They said.

【The Voice of Malaysia】A New Beginning of the Royal City

Klang was the first city in Selangor and was once the capital of Selangor. Indeed, it was also the first city to be the most important and prosperous.

Klang is still the royal city of Selangor and continue to be the top seaport in the country.

But Klang had lost its destiny for further development as a metropolis when the British colonial government moved the administrative centre to Kuala Lumpur.

Klang has suffered one blow after another in recent years.

How can the younger generation returning to their hometown leverage the strengths of local education and combine them with the power of cultural and creative industries? The aim of this strategy is to connect with the world and bring new life back to the old town.

Let’s look forward to it while we eat Bak Kut Teh!
